GengisCon 2011 Tournament Report
Phew, that was a LONG tournament! I'm happy to inform you all though that it was greatly successful and a ton of fun! There were 70 armies there and everyone was on top of their game. The tournament started a bit late, but otherwise everything went smoothly.
Friday we played two two-hour rounds from 6:30pm to 11:00pm, and Saturday we played three two-hour rounds from 10:00am to 6:00pm. You can find the missions in the other GenghisCon post.
I took some pictures of the tables in the Hotel, and the dealer's room so that you guys could see what it looked like (for those of you who didn't go, of course).
So, before I put up 70 army pictures, I thought I'd do my half-assed battle report (sorry, I was waaay to busy to be able to take pictures after every turn, plus my phone was dying the whole time, yay!).
So here's the army list I brought to the con:

So, our mission was Annihilation with Spearhead deployment. My opponent (Gavin) had said that not only were these last few months his re-introduction to 40k after a long break, but that he had never played against the new Tyranids before. I spent my first couple of turns sort of explaining the important stuff, and moving my army into position to pick apart some Orks after shooting them out of their vehicles.
It was about three turns into the game when I noticed my opponent had a Battlewagon (containing Gazkhull Thraka and some Burna Boyz) semi secluded in front of my army. He had some Warbuggies to the Battlewagon's right, and some terrain behind it. I moved up with my Hormagaunts, Termagaunts, Swarmlord & Tyrant Guard, and launched a massive assault on the Warbuggies and Battlewagon. Now, at this point I had completely surrounded his three kill-point unit. Some of you may know the trick I was about to try to pull off as the "Dave Special". Well, here's the setup:
I charged in with everything, and since my Swarmlord striked first in that combat (and had preferred enemy because he felt like having it), I was able to hit the Battlewagon several times, and for my armor penetration rolls I scored a 2 and a 4. Since the Battlewagon was open-topped, the 4 turned into a 5 and scored me a "Wrecked-Destroyed" result, scoring me three Kill Points since Gazkhull and his flamer buddies couldn't get out.
The rest of the game quickly went downhill for him as my Hive Guard wrecked (or immobilized) his other Battlewagon and my army continued to perform quite admirably.
I won the first round with 52 out of 54 points.
Round 2 - vs Orks (run by Andy Shellenbarger)
My Opponent's List:
HQ
Ghazghkull Thraka
Big Mek ('Eavy Armor, Kustom Force Field, Choppa)
ELITE
15x Kommandos (2x Burnas, Snikrot)

This time our mission was Capture and Control with Pitched Battle deployment. My opponent this round should also have scored 52/54 points so this was going to be a tough match. Here's our setup:
This game was admittedly not my best. I made several mistakes that ended up making the battle a little lop-sided, but Andy was still a fun opponent. I spent my first turn moving up slightly, anticipating the potential 21" charge that models in Battlewagons or Trukks can pull off. In his first turn, he sort of shuffled around a bit, and shot some bugs to no effect. In my second turn, I continued to move up and fire with my army, and this turn I immobilized one of his Batttlewagons (even through his Kustom Force Field) and stunned another one. Things were looking great, until I realized that I had moved my Gargoyles too far forward. They were now in charge range of AV11 Killer-Kans!
Thankfully, I got kind of lucky as my opponent proceeded to roll double-ones for his charge through difficult terrain. Otherwise though, the big mistake I made this game (that ended up costing me everything) was assuming that the patches of "hills" or whatever they were weren't difficult terrain. My opponent immediately decided they were, and after about 10 minutes of discussing how horribly stupid my turn was based on that information (meaning, I would have played my last two turns differently because I know Tyranids don't get Assault Grenades on pretty much anything), I finally just caved and let him have it his way especially since he wasn't budging. Now, I say it's my fault because we didn't discuss terrain beforehand, but it was a fairly dick move on his part because that was what made my army fall apart in one turn. And here's a picture of the game prior to that turn.
At this point I had been multi-assaulted by the Orks, but when my Genestealers came in via Outflank right behind Snikrot and the other Kommandos (on the left in the picture), I also multi-assaulted with my Swarmlord and roflpwned every one of those Orks. In the following turn, Ghazghkull and his Meganobz charged out of the Battlewagon to face the Swarmlord in one-on-one combat (okay, more like 6 on 3) and thanks to my Broodlord successfully getting off Hypnotic Gaze TWICE on Ghazghkull, I negated his attacks during the second half of Andy's Waaagh, and the turn after! I was winning that combat with three Genestealers, the Broodlord, and the Swarmlord left standing against two Meganobz!
Still though, at the end of the game, Mr. Shellenbarger had played admirably (scoring 52/54 points against me) and even went as far as giving me Sportsmanship points for taking that turn where my army fell apart "so well". Okay, whatever.
I lost that game but scored 22/54 points against Andy as I destroyed his highest-point unit (his Kommandos with Snikrot).
Round 3 - vs Imperial Guard (run by Ryan McKalip)
My Opponent's List:
HQ
Company Command Squad (4x Plasmaguns, 1x Plasma Pistol, Officer of the Fleet, Chimera)

Table: A very odd LoS-blocking Necron Tomb World
For the third round, I was paired against a dude who's been to Attactix a few times with his Imperial Guard army. He plays this super-competitive list regularly, so be prepared if you see him on Friday nights!
Anyways, our mission was Victory Points with Pitched Battle deployment (with extra points related to number of Kill Points dead/alive, and where they were, etc). I knew this game was going to be super tough for me because I've only beaten this type of Guard list with my bugs twice out of five times playing against it, and with this super-optimized list I knew I was in for it.
I spent my first few turns moving up and trying to take cover (and set up false targets of priority), but 5" S10 AP2 blasts don't care about special rules and stupid T3 units (and neither do Lascannons, Meltaguns, Demolitions, etc).
Here's the round that started the severe downward spiral for my army:
Long story short, I lost this round quite badly, scoring only 12/54 points. :suicide:
Round 4 - vs Dark Eldar (run by Michael Baswell)
My Opponent's List:
HQ
Lelith Hesperax
ELITES
9x Hekatrix Bloodbrides (Plasma Grenades, 3x Razorflails, Raider with Dark Lance, Night Shields, Flickerfield)
5x Incubi (one is a Klaivex with Onslaught, Venom with Flickerfield, 2x Splinter Cannons)

10x Kabalite Warriors (Blaster, Splinter Cannon, Raider with Dark Lance, Night Shields, Flickerfield)

Table: That same Blood Forest again...
The fourth round had us playing Sieze Ground (six objectives) with Dawn of War deployment. Here's a picture of my first turn movement after deployment:
The game started off really rough, with me losing my entire 200 point Gargoyle unit, AND my Tervigon. His shooting was really effective....wait...what??? OH THAT'S RIGHT! Dawn of War! The first turn is night-fighting! After realizing what had happened, Michael instructed me to "put them all back". I was in shock, and I wasn't going to argue lol. I was so impressed with his sportsmanship that I gave him points for being super nice about it. We sort of reset a tiny bit, and continued our game. My Tervigon (after he got his night-fight re-rolls thanks to Dark Eldar's "Night Vision" rule) ended up with 5 wounds taken so he lived through the terrifying firepower of the space emo's (though here's a picture of the following turn when it was dead anyways):
I spent the following turns playing super defensively since Dark Eldar are quite amazing against Tyranids (they shoot better and assault better), and ended up losing this one too. Here's a shot of the end of the game:
I lost this one with 16/54 points, scoring only one less objective than my opponent and not killing Lelith.
Round 5 - vs Blood Angels (run by Aaron Romani)
My Opponent's List:
HQ
Reclusiarch Chaplain
ELITES
Furioso Dreadnought (Blood Talons, Magna-Grapple, Searchlight, Drop Pod with Deathwind Missile Launcher)

HEAVY
Stormraven Gunship (Extra Armor, Twin-Linked Assault Cannon, Twin-Linked Multi-Melta, Hurricane Bolter sponsons)
Table: Some garbage table with bits of left-over terrain, mostly craters and barricades with a few hills
This last round had a weird mission. We had to have more "kill points" in the center of the table than our opponents (and have more "kill points" on the table than our opponent at the end of our game) and our deployment was Spearhead.
This mission was designed for my army. Being able to spawn gaunts in the center of the table was going to hurt him, and my list was specifically designed for two things: holding at least one "objective" really well, and killing "elite" armies like Blood Angels, Space Wolves, and Salamanders.
I could spend time explaining how this game went, but honestly, I can just show you a picture of the center of the table where his army was:
Needless to say, I basically tabled him AND fulfilled almost all of the mission objectives. He was a fantastic sport about things, and we even played speed 40k at the end so that I could get my assaults done (when there wouldn't have been time or a reason for him to otherwise). I gave him several sportsmanship points for being really quick and very cool.
I grabbed 52/54 points this game.
-----------------------
So after everything, I walked out of the tournament with 154/270 Battle Points and 33/45 Appearance points, earning me 37th out of 70+ players. I wasn't dead last, and I did better than Noto, so I call that a moral victory. :excited:
Prizes weren't all that great (there was some issue with the room costing extra or something) but everyone there got a GW lanyard, and $400 worth of GW 40k product were handed out as door prizes (of which I won a box of Kabalite Warriors!). Here's a picture of the hammer/trophies that were handed out:
So, Best Sportsman went to a guy named Tulio who got 2 sportsmanship points (even though two people got 10 sportsmanship points each), but three of his opponents voted him as their favorite opponent, and he was the only one to get three votes!
Best Appearance went to Jeff Lowe (who took 10th place anyways) who got 190/270 battle points, and 46/45 painting points (with the extra point coming from "Judges Choice" to break ties).
Best General went to Adam Tricola (the Best Overall from Tacticon 2010!). He scored 234/270 battle points, and 41/45 painting points!
And Best Overall went to Andy Shellenbarger, the Ork player I played in round 2! He scored an AMAZING 254/270 battle points, and 35/45 painting points!
It was a sweeeeet event, and I'm very happy with having 5 rounds to prove that I'm not in the bottom 25% (see the Tacticon thread). There were a ton of beautiful armies there, and some that weren't so beautiful. So, without further adieu, here they are!
(PS: I am separating out the armies that I took multiple pictures of, but still including their "whole army" photos below to keep track of how many armies were there)
------------------------------
----------------------
68 Armies photo'd (don't know how the other ones aren't in here, people were supposed to put their armies out according to the judge).
Here's the spread (I think these are accurate):

-10 Blood Angels
-7 Chaos Space Marines
-7 Tyranids
-7 Imperial Guard
-6 Space Wolves
-4 Necrons
-4 Orks

68 Armies photo'd (don't know how the other ones aren't in here, people were supposed to put their armies out according to the judge).
